After three years of rigorous self-funded research and development, EquiVita Genetics has now achieved a purity in sex-sorting of 71.6%. This means that there is a 71.6% chance on the sex of your desire.
We will continue to augment this percentage, but are already very proud to share this with you.
The journey
FROM EXPENSIVE AND INEFFICIENT FLOW CYTOMETRY TO A HIGHLY TECHNOLOGICAL CARTRIDGE !
This journey began when Viktor-Jan, a seasoned gynecologist, was inspired by a conversation with his sister Charlotte, who worked at an equestrian center. The realization
that a horse’s value could skyrocket
if its gender could be predetermined
sparked a three-year odyssey of fundamental research.
With the support of the Innovative Starter Grant of €50K by VLAIO, EquiVita Genetics conducted an initial pilot study in collaboration with Biomed (UHasselt). This project focused on gender selection through flow cytometry (FACS) of sperm cells, based on a difference in DNA density between X- and Y-bearing cells.
But why no flow cytometry?
Flow cytometry proved to be impractical due to high costs, limited availability, and technical complexity. Additionally, the sorting process took approximately 8 hours, making it challenging to synchronize with mare insemination effectively.
The technology must be scalable, easy to implement, and readily available.
Our solution
To meet these criteria, EquiVita Genetics developed a cartridge that can be easily 3D printed and distributed, which enables stallion or mare owners to perform the sex-sorting AT THEIR OWN PLACE.
